April 2010 -- Emily from Atlanta Audubon brought binoculars, field guides, and her enthusiasm of birds to Earth Club this month. We learned how to best and quickly identify birds as well as what are the most pressing bird conservation issues like land fragmentation and loss of habitat. Grady's campus is a great place to bird because it has big trees (and small ones, thanks to Trees Atlanta), lots of space, and one of the city's largest parks next door, which has even bigger trees and a huge lake. The diversity of habitats is impressive for being in the heart of Midtown.

March 2010 -- As we develop a master plan for our school, we are considering where to move the garden, places for more trees, natural seating areas, and pollinator gardens. We recently surveyed the campus and walked a section of the BeltLine to better understand our surroundings.

| Grady is one block away from the BeltLine, and located in the Piedmont Park Natural Neighborhood of the BeltLine Arboretum. We are developing a master plan to make our school a green and healthy school. Stay tuned for developments. |
Georgia Arbor Day 2010, February 19th -- In Georgia, we celebrate Arbor Day in February. Its best to plant trees during fall/winter when they are dormant. We had a great Arbor Day program, thanks to the Alliance for Climate Education. We decided to "do something" and planted a tree…how appropriate!

| We planted an American Elm on Arbor Day, a stately, appropriate species because it's one of the symbolic trees of the Piedmont Park Natural Neighborhood. | |
January 2010 -- The Grady H.S. Earth Club has been rooted for years by many committed students and by the leadership of Ms. Ellis and Mr. Stevens. Trees Atlanta and partners are making regular visits to assist with programming, educational opportunities, and field trips.

| One of our projects is to inventory all the trees on Grady's campus. Eli Dickerson from the Fernbank Museum of Natural History helped the students and Robby collect the data. | During our inventory, Ms. Ellis found a caterpillar on a Water Oak. It later went into chrysalis and became a beautiful butterfly. |
