NeighborWoods

In 2001, Trees Atlanta launched a program called NeighborWoods to help Atlantans learn the importance of planting trees and caring for both young and old trees in their communities.

NeighborWoods is a hands-on learning experience for both children and adults. Check out the neighborhoods with which Trees Atlanta has worked.

If you would like to plant trees in your neighborhood, we can help. Our experienced staff and volunteers provide guidance and will help you locate the right tree for the right place. The trees are hand selected by our staff and are typically native, hardwood trees. In areas that are relatively well-shaded by existing trees, understory and flowering trees may be available. Tree availability varies by year. We will work with your neighborhood or community group to plant the trees and teach everyone involved how to maintain and care for newly planted trees. Keep reading to find out how.

Who can participate?

Any neighborhood inside the perimeter of Atlanta is invited to host a project. Areas given priority are those that are barren and in need of shade, areas frequented by pedestrians, and areas where community residents are willing to help plant the trees. We require a representative from the community to host and help organize the project.

When and where are trees planted?
Trees Atlanta plants trees during October-March. Candidates should live in areas needing at least 30 trees. Planting spots for trees can be in the area between the sidewalk and the street, in front yards or public areas such as "islands" or parks.

How are the plantings funded?
Trees can cost between $50 and $150. We work with neighborhoods to try to find funding for their trees, and we ask that neighborhoods give any support that they can.

What people are saying about NeighborWoods?

Here in Inman Park, we're committed to maintaining our tree canopy, but we don't have the expertise to go it alone. Trees Atlanta is our partner. The help we get from Trees Atlanta is not just valuable - it's critical.

  ~ Jim Abbot, Inman Park

Trees Atlanta's NeighborWoods program has played a crucial role in the revitalization of the Capitol View neighborhood. Together, we've planted over 300 trees in our community. The result was an increase in community pride, beautification, and the improvement of the urban environment in which we live, work and play.
