100 Trees for Carter and 100 Buckeyes for Rosalynn at The Carter Center
As October nears and the air turns cooler, the season for planting new trees approaches. October is also a time to remember a homegrown treasure: Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924. To honor his 100th birthday, Trees Atlanta began planting 100 trees at The Carter Center that day, starting with two live oaks: one at The Carter Center and one at the Georgia State Capitol, where a statue of President Carter looks out over the new tree with open hands. When President Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, the project became a living tribute to his life and legacy. We also planted 100 buckeyes in honor of Rosalynn Carter.
As we approach another exciting year of planting trees, we take the time to reflect on the October 2025 completion of 100 trees at The Carter Center. Through bouts of heavy rain, Trees Atlanta’s dedicated volunteers planted collections of magnolia, dogwood, oak, and beech to add shade, beauty, and vital habitat across the campus. These trees stand as a lasting reminder that small, thoughtful actions can nurture communities for generations.

A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values
The completed planting celebrates a partnership rooted in shared values. For decades, Trees Atlanta and The Carter Center have worked together to connect people with nature and celebrate and strengthen Atlanta’s urban forest. Twenty years ago, we gave President Carter a Georgia oak for his 80th birthday, and for his 90th, we planted a Pollinator Garden on the grounds. The Carter Center is also the home of our Annual Tree Sale each October.
As these trees grow, they will carry forward President Carter’s belief in caring for the environment, serving others, and leaving the world better than we found it. Trees Atlanta is grateful for its partnership with The Carter Center, both for their service to communities around the world and for the ongoing opportunities to honor President Carter. Like his legacy, these trees will bring hope and flourish for years to come.
