Have you seen the newest feature growing in our campus garden? A Little Free Library has sprouted in our garden, and we want to share.

Take a book. Share a book.

The little shelves of this Little Free Library will contain books from a collection of books we think Trees Atlanta friends and neighbors will appreciate. We invite you to take one book and perhaps bring a book to share with others.

We’d love to hear back from you as you visit our tiny library branch. We’ve left a journal and pen in the library for you to leave us a note or thoughts on the titles you find there.

Trees Atlanta is one of 12 partners in cities across the country participating in a community project featuring a special collection of books. There are twelve titles in this series called the One World Essentials. According to program sponsors, One World and Little Free Library, “the Essentials series comprises a dozen titles that help readers understand and shape our changing world.” The site selected for each Little Free Library was inspired by the title and community with meaningful ties to the book and/or its author.

One of the titles included in the series is All We Can Save, a bestselling collection of writings by 60 women leading on climate, which was co-edited by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Dr. Katharine K. Wilkinson. Dr. Wilkinson is a local author, renowned climate change strategist and advocate, and friend of Trees Atlanta. Time magazine named her one of fifteen “Women Who Will Save the World.”

The One World Essential Series

For each of the 12 books in the series, a local partner was selected to receive and install a custom-designed Little Free Library book-sharing box. Partners receive brand-new books from the One World Essentials series, provided by One World, to share in a customized box provided by Little Free Library. One World is a new imprint of the Random House publishing company centered on writers who “represent voices from across the spectrum of humanity telling critical, universally important, and compelling stories about a changing world.”

The books that will be shared (and their connected cities) are:

• See No Stranger by Valarie Kaur (Los Angeles, CA)
• Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong (Oakland, CA)
• All We Can Save by Katharine K. Wilkinson and Ayana Johnson (Atlanta, GA)
• The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore (Baltimore, MD)
• Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates (Baltimore, MD)
• What the Eyes Don’t See by Dr. Mona Hanna (Flint, MI)
• The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee (Brooklyn, NY)
• Born a Crime by Trevor Noah (Manhattan, NY)
• The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio (Ossining, NY)
• My Broken Language by Quiara Alegría Hudes (Philadelphia, PA)
• How to Be an Antiracist by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi (Washington, DC)

Trees Atlanta has been selected to host the Little Free Library that spotlights the anthology, All We Can Save. According to Dr. Wilkerson, “When I was thinking about potential places where it could live, Trees Atlanta leapt to mind given such kindred missions.”

The Little Free Library is located on Trees Atlanta Kendeda TreeHouse campus. Look for the box in the Shufeldt Ethnobotany Garden at the campus walkway next to the Atlanta Beltline Arboretum.

All We Can Do

From the All We Can Do website about the book: “Intermixing essays with poetry and art, this book is both a balm and a guide for knowing and holding what has been done to the world, while bolstering our resolve never to give up on each other or our collective future. We must summon truth, courage, and solutions, to turn away from the brink and toward life-giving possibility. Curated by two climate leaders, this book is a collection and celebration of visionaries who are leading us on a path toward all we can save.”

Limited copies of this book will appear in Trees Atlanta’s Little Free Library, along with the other titles in this series. You may also consider borrowing a copy from your local library or purchasing your copy from the All We Can Do Project.

Trees Atlanta’s Little Free Library will be operated by our amazing volunteers who will curate and maintain the library. In addition to the One World Essential titles, Trees Atlanta will be accepting and adding donated books from our community.
