Join Trees Atlanta for an inspiring evening with author Elspeth Hay as she explores the forgotten history—and exciting future—of perennial nut trees. Drawing from her new book, Feed Us with Trees, Hay shares how trees like oaks, chestnuts, and hazelnuts once provided staple foods while creating healthy, biodiverse landscapes.

Blending science, Indigenous knowledge, and stories from growers and researchers, Hay challenges conventional ideas about agriculture and invites us to rethink our relationship with trees—not just as sources of shade and beauty, but as essential partners in creating resilient cities, healthier ecosystems, and local food systems.

Whether you're an urban forester, gardener, environmentalist, regenerative farmer, or simply curious about how trees can shape a more abundant future, you'll leave inspired to see the nut trees of Atlanta’s urban forest in a whole new light.

Books will be available for purchase at the event thanks to Eagle Eye Bookstore.

About the Author: Elspeth Hay is a writer, public radio host, and creator of the Local Food Report, a weekly feature that has aired on CAI, the Cape & Islands NPR Station, since 2008. Deeply immersed in her own local food system, she writes and reports for print, radio, and online media with a focus on food and the environment. Elspeth’s work has been featured in the Boston Globe, NPR’s Kitchen Window, Heated with Mark Bittman, The Provincetown Independent, and numerous other publications. Through her conversations with growers, harvesters, processors, cooks, policy makers, Indigenous knowledge-keepers, scientists, researchers, and visionaries, she aims to rebuild our cultural store of culinary knowledge—and to reconnect us with the people, places, and ideas that feed us. Elspeth lives with her family on Cape Cod, MA.

• Getting Here: This event will take place at the Trees Atlanta Kenda Tree House (825 Warner St. SW 30310) Atlanta Bike racks are located on the side of the building (near the silo in the Picnic Patio). We are approximately 1 mile from the Oakland City and West End MARTA train stations (Red and Gold Lines). Limited number of parking spaces are available at our location, in addition to limited street parking.

• Feeling snacky? 🌳🍔🍧Order food from our neighborhood’s Atlanta Beltline Marketplace, just steps from the Trees Atlanta Kendeda TreeHouse! (Pre)order your food an hour before this event or pick up at GABS (Good As Burgers), or Glaciers Italian Ice. Lee & White is accessible via a walk on the Atlanta Beltline for those who plan to eat there before or after this event.
