Have you ever wondered who’s who in Atlanta’s urban forest? Join Trees Atlanta and Blue Heron Nature Preserve for a special Second Saturday Safari to connect and learn about the trees that live amongst us in the City in the Forest. We’ll explore the trails of this remarkable 30-acre greenspace, learn how to recognize a few of our leafy neighbors, and discover some of their remarkable adaptations and ways they support the local ecosystem and Atlanta. This is your chance to slow down, wander beneath the canopy, and experience our urban forest through a fresh lens.
About the Guides: Maxine and Kent Watkins live in Sandy Springs. They enjoy hiking, biking and exploring new parks during their free time. They are experienced tour leaders supporting Trees Atlanta's mission by planting, pruning and sharing their love of trees with others.
Blue Heron Nature Preserve is a non-profit that manages a 30-acre nature preserve in the City of Atlanta. - Getting There: Meet your guides at Blue Heron Nature Preserve (4055 Roswell Rd). There is a bike rack by the main building. This park is accessible by MARTA bus Route 5 from the Lindbergh Center or Dunwoody station. Hop off the bus at Roswell Rd NE at Lakemoore Dr NE. It is directly across the street from Pike Nursery. This stop is on the same side of Roswell Rd as our entrance is very close to our main driveway. There are 32 parking spots in the lot and overflow parking spaces are available behind our building on Rickenbacker Rd. There is a gravel path that leads from Rickenbacker Rd to our parking lot. All parking is free.
- What to Bring and Wear: Reusable water bottle, sun and bug protection. Wear Sneakers or hiking shoes. Comfortable clothes. Bathrooms are available inside the building that will be available for attendees to use.
- Terrain, Incline, and Length: This will be a 1-mile walk with moderate hills, a board walk, slate paths, and many roots. The portion of the trail entering the wetlands includes a stone staircase with handrails. This tour is not ADA accessible.
