Workshop: Grow Your City Forest - Rain Barrels, Composting, & Gardening 101

Thu Jul 23 | 11am-2:30pm

Join Trees Atlanta and the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management for a fun, hands-on workshop where you’ll learn up to three sustainable practices that can help you earn up to three acorns in Trees Atlanta’s City Forest Certified program. Participants will take home what they make! Learn more about the additional acorns you can earn, resources, and support you can receive through this program to certify your yard or neighborhood greenspace here.

The City Forest Certification is Trees Atlanta’s newest community action program. This hands-on program is designed to guide and empower everyday people with practical knowledge and skills. Neighbor by neighbor and property by property, we can grow and connect a network of forests big and small. By attending this program, you can earn 1 Acorn towards your City Forest Certification

To help us prepare materials, please register and pay for each and every workshop you plan to attend below.

Acorn # 1: 11 - 12pm, Rain barrel workshop - $40

Participants will learn how to capture and reuse rainwater at home. They will construct a rain barrel to bring home. Adding a rain barrel to your home or green space conserves water, reduces runoff, prevents erosion, and protects the health of Atlanta’s streams. In a changing climate, a rain barrel system is a great backup for watering trees and plants on your patch of Atlanta’s urban forest. Bonus- option to watch this City Forest Certified training video. Already certified? This is a great way to work towards your water stewardship badge for your City Forest Certified sign!

Acorn # 2: 12 - 1pm, Composting Workshop - $40

Participants will construct a compost bin and learn how to transform food scraps into nutrient-rich compost. Participants get to bring the compost bin they construct home! Adding compost to our patch of Atlanta’s urban forest improves the health of our urban soils, and the resilience of plants and trees in your yard. Participants can bring their bin home. Watch this City Forest Certified video to get inspired! Already certified? This acorn earns you another point towards your Local Food Stewardship badge for your City Forest Certified sign.

Acorn # 3: 1 - 2:30pm, Gardening 101 Workshop- $20

Participants will learn gardening 101 and leave with a few goodies to get their garden started in their own patch of Atlanta’s urban forest. Integrating more local fruits and vegetables into your diet can have an impact. Replacing 1 out of every 5 things in your fridge with a local fruit, veggie etc helps. Learn more about the impact of growing and eating more local food for our forest here. Already certified? Gardening at home can help you earn an acron towards your Local Food Stewardship badge.

Each of these simple tools can make a big impact on Atlanta’s urban forest. Conserving water, improving soil health, and reducing waste increase the impact we can all have as stewards of Atlanta’s urban forest. 🌳
